Adult Courses

Courses are held at Hertford Selections Children's Centre unless stated otherwise.

Managing Anger in the Family - A 6 week course provided by Natural Flair to support families who are experiencing anger in the home by the adults, children or both.  Learn strategies to support a calm family home life and how to manage the feelings that relate to angry outbursts.  All sessions must be attended.  Creche available but limited spaces.  Call Natural Flair on 01992 446051 to book.  Course is free.

Parenting Boys - 2 sessions to help you understand the differences between boys and girls learning and development and how best to support your son with his learning, communication and behaviour.  Please attend both sessions.  Creche available but places must be booked in advance. The course is free.

4 My Family and Me - A 4 week course to help you build on your existing parenting strengths to help your children to develop the skills they need to understand their feelings.  The course is based on the Protective Behaviours theme and helps to strengthen family relationships.  Creche available but places must be booked in advance. The course is free.  Tuesdays 9:30 - 11:30 am

Family Toolkit - 4 week course to provide lots of tips and strategies to help avoid those temper tantrums and lots of other difficult-to-cope-with behaviours.  It will help you recognise your strengths and how to build on them to make family life run more smoothly. The course is free.  Tuesdays 6:00 - 8:00 pm.

Families Feeling Safe - A programme of 9 sessions to provide parents ideas and strategies to help members of the family build their confidence, cope with fears and worries, make safe choices.  The course is free with a limited number in the creche.  Tuesdays 9:30 - 11:30 am   16 Jan until 20 March 2018.  This course has now been cancelled.

Parenting Puzzle - 10 week course to help parents and carers cope with the ups and downs of family life.  Looking at relationships, behaviour, discipline and many other aspects of parenting, the course will provide tips and strategies to make life with children easier.  Lots of emphasis on the positive aspects of parenting and having fun with your children. The course is free, creche is available.  Tuesdays 9.30 - 11.30 am

24 April until 3 July 2018.

Welcome to the World - 8 week course will help first time parents prepare for the changes ahead as you anticipate the arrival of your new baby. Topics covered include empathy and loving attentiveness, infant brain development, healthy choices, managing stress and promoting self esteem and confidence and effective communication.  Parents will learn about bonding, improving parental wellbeing and improving knowledge and skills in breast-feeding and practical care of babies. The course is free.

 First Aid for Babies and Children - Would you know what to do in an emergency? Come along to a 3 hour course and learn all the basics.  Certificate and handbook provided.  The course costs £10.00.  9:30am - 12:30pm,

Baby Sessions

Antenatal My Baby's Brain  - Run by Children's Centre staff.  A workshop with dvd showing how your baby learns during their 1st year of life and how the simple things you do every day will help their brain develop.  Session is free. Mondays 7:00pm - 9:00pm at Hertford Selections Children's Centre on:

Antenatal Breastfeeding Workshops  - Run by a Breastfeeding Network Trainer and Children's Centre staff. If you are expecting your first baby, or would like to brush up your knowledge, come along to the workshop to meet other expectant parents and hear about the Children's Centre.  This session is for all parents-to-be, and will provide information to help you make an informed choice about feeding your baby. Best for mothers from 34 weeks. Free. 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Baby Massage Course  - 5 week course for babies from a few weeks until they can crawl. Learn the techniques of baby massage in a warm and relaxing environment. You and your baby will enjoy spending time together as our trained instructor demonstrates how to massage a different part of the body each week. Daily massage can help settle fretful babies, enhance communication, stimulate the immune system, promote better sleep and support growth and development.

My Baby and Me - A 6 week programme of sessions to enable new parents to get to know each other.  The sessions will start and end with songs and rhymes and each week there will be a discussion about a topic such as feeding your baby, sleep and routines, safety in the home, how your baby's brain develops, play and communication.  The sessions are free but we ask for a contribution in week 6, which is Basic First Aid for Babies of £5.  However, if you attend at least 4 out of the 1st 5 weeks, the First Aid session is free. Please book for First Aid.

Postnatal Pilates - A 6 week course for new mums and their babies. The classes will focus on improving posture, strengthening abdominals and pelvic floor and to help you deal with the demands of motherhood. No childcare needed as babies come too, from 6 weeks to crawling.

Introducing Solids Workshop - The current guidance is to start your baby on solids at around six months, but where do you start? This session will introduce you to the idea of "baby-led weaning" which helps you recognise when your baby is ready to try solid food alongside milk and gives you lots of suggestions on how to avoid your baby becoming a "fussy eater". Session is free. From 1:30pm - 2:30pm.

Baby Lunch Club - A baby-led weaning session where you can bring lunch for yourself and your baby to eat together.  Staff will be available to discuss any questions and concerns you may have.  A practical session for those parents who have attended Introducing Solids Workshops.  Session is free.

Family Courses

Baking Beanes

A 5 or 6 week course to get your children off to a healthy start. Games and activities focused on healthy eating and trying new tastes. Parents will help their children prepare a dish which will either be cooked during the session or taken home to cook. All ingredients and equipment will be supplied. Suitable for children from 2 and a half years.

Early Talk

 A 6 week course for children at preschool or nursery who are having difficulties with speech and language. The course will be run for parents and children together and provide activities which can be repeated at home. Referrals accepted from Early Years settings; please speak to your child's keyworker if you would like to be referred. The course is not always suitable for children already attending speech therapy - please speak to your speech therapist for advice. This Course is free.
